What is Picnic in the Park? For many children who receive free and reduced-priced meals during the school year, summer can mean hunger. Just as learning does not end when school lets out, neither does a child’s need for good nutrition. In fact, 84% of children in our county who receive free or reduced-priced lunches during the school year don’t receive meal assistance during the summer, a time of critical brain development. That’s 34,000 children in our community. Picnic in the Park offers free, nutritious meals to ensure that summer is fun for all kids in our county. We rely on community volunteers to help manage and support these meal distributions, by handing out lunches, conducting essential meal tracking, and ensuring the safety of our clients. Ideal Volunteers: Are able to commit to multiple shifts throughout the summer (ex: come every Wednesday or pick a week and come M-F) to provide continuity. Ideally, volunteers should be able to volunteer for at least five shifts during the summer. Are available for approximately two hours, start to finish, during lunchtime on weekdays during the period of June 8-August 7. Are willing to undergo a brief criminal background check. Feel comfortable standing, bending and doing light lifting for 2-3 hours. Feel comfortable engaging with people face-to-face and enforcing social distancing and safety protocols. Are age 14 and up. If you are a senior volunteer, we will continue to follow the advice of Santa Barbara Public Health and the CDC. Site Leads are also needed who: Are able to make an ongoing commitment beyond five shifts during the summer. Will coordinate communication between other volunteers, site staff, Foodbank staff, and PIP attendees. Will enforce the Federal guidelines/rules for free lunch service and ensure appropriate documentation is recorded each day. Will enforce social distancing and safety protocols. Will take on overall leadership of a site, including help with set-up, sign-in, and clean-up. Are able to attend a Zoom Orientation prior to the start of Picnic in the Park (if you are unable for the Orientation dates, but interested in being a Site Lead, please contact us). Orientation is required for any volunteers that would like to be Site Leads and we encourage all interested Picnic in the Park volunteers to sign up.

Mission Statement

The Foodbank of Santa Barbara County’s mission is to end hunger and transform the health of Santa Barbara County through good nutrition.

Description

OUR APPROACH

The Foodbank of Santa Barbara County is committed to taking a negative thing - hunger - and through our combined community efforts transforming it into a positive thing - health. This leap forward in health is achieved with three ingredients: food, education and empowerment. The challenges of Hunger, Nutrition and Obesity used to be separate areas dealt with by different approaches and by different agencies and groups. The Foodbank is now tackling all three of these problems at once - through a nationally recognized continuum of programs that provide cradle to graduation intervention in children’s lives.

This builds what we call their food literacy: their ability to look after themselves with food - to budget, shop cook and use food responsibly. If we can transform their relationship to food to being one of using it as a scarce and valuable resource to power their personal health, then that is going to create that tipping point that makes a huge transformation in the health of Santa Barbara County.

By supporting the Foodbank, you are also supporting the good work of
300 agencies and programs countywide.
