The Active Aging Program of Salt Lake County Aging & Adult Services is recruiting volunteers who are interested in helping teach people with chronic health conditions about ways to manage their symptoms.

Living Well with Chronic Conditions is a workshop given two and a half hours, once a week, for six weeks. People with different chronic health problems attend together. Workshops are facilitated by two trained leaders, one or both of whom are non-health professionals with a chronic disease themselves.

Subjects covered include:

  • Techniques for frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation
  • Appropriate exercise to maintain and improve strength
  • Appropriate use of medications and proper nutrition
  • Communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals
  • How to evaluate new treatments
  • Sleep and meditation

Peer Leaders will need to attend the all day program training on the following dates: June 16, 17, 23, 24, 2021. This is an in-person training.

Peer Leaders will also need to complete all Salt Lake County requirements and commit to teach at least two complete workshops in a one - year period.
COVID-19 State and County guidelines will be put in place and volunteers will need to follow them.

Description

As the largest Area Agency on Aging (AAA) in Utah, Salt Lake County Aging Services is the community focal-point for older adults, their families and caregivers; providing a comprehensive system of services that promote the health and wellbeing of older adults while supporting and assisting seniors who need help to remain independent.
There is no such thing as a 'typical’ older person. Their situations and their lives are very diverse. While many seniors are healthy and active, remaining in the workforce, volunteering in their communities or enjoying their friends and families, others are frail and struggle to remain independent. Aging Services is the recognized community leader for aging needs, options and opportunities. WE CAN HELP!
