Reusable Sanitary Pads - Best Practices Research

In our community, many young women cannot afford sanitary products and will stay home from school during their menstrual cycles, as a result. This is compounded by time at home due to COVID. Working with a US volunteer group of teens led by an expert seamstress, NTS wants to make upwards of 200 reusable sanitary pads for our female students and their female relatives. The goal is to keep our young women in school!

There are many materials and designs possible. We are seeking a research assistant who can evaluate different best practices around the world. This will include fabrics/absorbent materials, cleaning and disinfecting methods, types of organizations using and distributing pads, success rates and lessons learned. The goal is to identify a variety of options. We will then have the Kenyan student community select what will work best for them.

Your volunteer work will help young women stay in school and, ultimately, become economically self-sufficient.

Mission Statement

Nyamboyo Technical School is transforming young lives, families and communities through vocational education and economic opportunity in Nyamboyo, Kenya.

Description

NTS a not-for-profit 3-year vocational school located in the Nyamboyo Village in southwestern Kenya. We provide professional, technical education to the economically disadvantaged teens and young adults of the community. Our students are ages 14-20 and all have family histories of poverty, lack of education and job opportunities, and chronic food insecurity. At NTS, they receive professional vocational training, 3 meals a day to combat hunger and malnutrition, English-language classes, computer training, and daily COVID-safe sports activities. They also participate in school-run businesses, learning how to become business owners and making money while in school. Our students thrive professionally, physically, and psychologically.

Ultimately, we are building a positive, prosperous future for our youth, as employees, small business owners, and serial entrepreneurs!

NTS is led by Executive Director, Jones Obiria, a native of Nyamboro, who founded the school because he felt an obligation to lead after he, himself was able to escape poverty through the gift of education. Here in the U.S., a small, dedicated team of two are working to help raise awareness and funds for NTS. In Jones’ words "People save their own lives. Our job is to provide the opportunity. I hope you will join our journey."
