One unexpected bill, one too-expensive textbook, or one pay cut could be the difference between staying enrolled and dropping out. Millions of students leave college without degrees because their basic needs for food, affordable housing, transportation, childcare, and their mental health are central conditions for learning. 56% of students at public colleges and universities experience some form of food insecurity, housing insecurity, or homelessness, 89% of low-income first-generation students leave college without a degree, 1 in 3 college students have been "too depressed to function", and only 13% of community colleges have mental health services on campus. COVID-19 has exasperated these issues further. Support Services Coordinators are our line of defense to connect students to the professionals they need!
We are looking for volunteers to work virtually with our students and student leaders in non-clinical support capacities. Volunteers will take on caseloads of individual students, helping them with a range of needs - such as balancing their schedule, fixing study habits, applying for FAFSA, SNAP benefits, Unemployment, or other assistance programs, contacting campus offices (i.e. Financial Aid, disability accommodations, counseling, campus security, academic advising), and locating food pantries, emergency housing, or mental health services. For the duration of COVID, volunteers will also help students locate vaccine appointments. Volunteers will occasionally work together to lead virtual group workshops for students. Students generally range from 17-35 years of age. This is an ongoing position, and we prefer people who can stay for at least one full academic year (August-May).
A majority of the responsibilities can be flexibly scheduled at times that work for you, as you will be mainly meeting 1-on-1 with students. As such, there are no set "hours", though we provide hour-tracking for your personal records.
Although prior experience is not required, strong internet research skills, empathy, a basic understanding of college processes, and the ability to lead groups of students will be needed. An understanding of video games/gaming culture is a huge plus, as all of the students we work with are gamers! You will need to have strong computer skills, as this is a virtual opportunity and uses Discord to connect with students. We will train on how to use Discord.
We will consider current students as volunteers however we would prefer that students be current seniors, second-degree, or graduate students. Academic credit is available for students. This position is a great opportunity for folks interested in social work, public policy, advocacy/justice work, diversity and inclusion, or higher education administration!

Mission Statement
The EGD Collective creates community, equity, and leaders of character through games.
Description
The EGD Collective is a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to removing barriers in games communities and making the industry a more accessible academic and career opportunity for all. EGD supports casual gaming communities, as well as aspiring and early-career games professionals by providing free events, educational programming, and support systems to help students navigate through academic, financial, and emotional crises - ensuring students can complete their education and are prepared to establish healthy workplace boundaries in whichever field they choose. In 2020, EGD was awarded the inaugural AnyKey Changemakers Grant sponsored by ESL and the US Air Force for our efforts involving diversity, equity, and inclusion in gaming.
EGD was founded in 2016 as a student organization at Hunter College in NYC, and quickly grew to serve over 2500 students annually. In 2019, EGD went national, and we incorporated in 2021. In the past 2 years, we have saved 36 students from dropping out or getting academically dismissed from college, and have provided over 700 students with crisis support resources. Our fellowship programs in esports management and game development attract over 50 students each year, that prepare them for the games industry. In fact, 17 of our alumni have credited EGD as the reason they have their current job, internship, or academic opportunity! Students also have a true voice in the organization, with voting privileges at the annual general meeting.
