ORGANIZATION: CLIMATE CENTS

Image_202104200939

Climate Cents is looking for a project manager to help us for a long term initiative. The work will involve helping in strategic planning, creating pitch decks and other presentation materials, researching partner nonprofits that implement resiliency and adaptation strategies, outreach to various Environmental Justice organizations in Los Angeles, and identifying sustainable funding opportunities.

Our team consists of volunteers that have full-time jobs, so we need someone who's able to work alone, follow a strategic plan while also making executive decisions. Applicants should have good organizational skills and be self-motivated. Although we've been around for a few years, we're still in start-up mode, so that means doing more with less. We'll have at least one intern this summer, so we hope to have other resources for support.

Mission Statement

The mission of Climate Cents is to inspire people to support local projects that fight climate change and to provide an easy way to take meaningful action. Climate change can feel depressing, overwhelming, and far-away, rendering many to conclude the average person can’t make a difference. Climate Cents educates the public that carbon can be drawn down right here in our local communities, it provides positive and hopeful information about our fight against global warming, and it de-mystifies the science by demonstrating how our projects reduce carbon in the atmosphere and tracking the progress of our work.

Description

Climate Cents is for the person who wants to do something about global warming in his/her own community, but doesn’t know where to get started. We use tech tools to support, promote, and amplify local solutions. Our first milestone was building a crowd-funding platform for local projects run by other nonprofits that are fighting climate change, usually in low-income and disadvantaged communities. We helped research the amount of carbon sequestered for each project, and we worked closely with the partner nonprofit to promote and support the project. Since then, we changed our model to "Crowd-funding Challenges", where we created a fundraising competition with prizes. We’ve completed two Challenges to date - supporting Kelp Restoration and E-Waste Recycling, both raising $10,000 each - but the last project we were organizing was shut down due to COVID. Currently, we are planning to launch a new initiative to build as many climate projects as possible by the 2028 Olympics, partnering with organizers of the games and some corporate sponsors.

We’ve been lucky to run the whole organization through volunteerism. We had volunteer coders build out our current tech assets (our crowd-funding platform has been operational for a few years, and we are near completion of our app). We have four permanent board members, all volunteers, and we are seeking to expand our board and find someone to handle our day to day operations.
