ORGANIZATION: Hope for Single Moms

If you’ve ever thought you want to leave a legacy of caring, then Hope for Single Moms has a great opportunity for you! We make it possible for single moms to get the career education they need to provide well for their families and find a path to a better, more fulfilling life; thus breaking the cycle of poverty.

There are over 29,000 single mom families in Kent County alone; nearly half live in poverty. Giving these families an opportunity for a better life takes a village; and board members are part of that village. As a board member you will have a front row seat to these family trans-formations, as well as cast the vision for future growth and opportunities for HSM.

HOPE FOR SINGLE MOMS has grown from a start-up in 2016 to a respected changemaker in West Michigan, raising over $100,000 in 2022. In our six year history, we have four graduates and provided financial assistance to three additional single mom families. More information regarding our program is available on our website at

Our goal is for every child to thrive and every single mom to become financially self-sufficient - first in West Michigan, and then, throughout the state. In order to achieve these objectives, we need to develop our programmatic impact and our organizational capacity. We are seeking volunteer leaders, who have a passion to help single mom families thrive, to join our dynamic board of directors.
Board members are actively involved in organizational governance, have the fiduciary responsibility of the organization and are expected to attend six-one hour bi-monthly board meetings, as well as personally donate.

If you’re interested in using your expertise, perspective, experience and leadership to help give these families a better life, let’s continue the conversation.

About Hope for Single Moms

Mission Statement

Our Mission is to help the children in single mom families thrive; first in West Michigan and then throughout MI. HSM is taking single mom families out of high-risk poverty situations and giving them the tools they need to achieve, and maintain, economic independence. The main way we do that is by helping single parents become full-time students finish college or get a trade certification. Each family sets goals and receives a customized plan on how to achieve their goals. It is holistic, providing academics and life skills and family time during the education process and transition into the workforce. We invite people in the community to walk alongside a single mom to decrease the loneliness and isolation she feels, to give her hope and encourage her as a student parent on her journey to becoming financially stable and having children who thrive.

Nearly half of single moms work minimum-wage jobs and are unable to pay all the bills. Hope for Single Moms uses a "teach-a-woman-to-fish" approach. With a better paying job, single moms can provide well for their children. With better food, children will grow better physically and do well academically. Hope for Single Moms is 100% donor-funded and volunteer-staffed. That means single moms NEED YOU to invest your time and resources to help them go back to school. By doing so you fight poverty and childhood hunger in single mom families. You not only change the world for two generations, but society for countless generations to come.

Our FREE career consultation not only gives single moms a career path and goal, but we assess whether she is ready to be successful at school, parenting and homework. We offer a network of support. Mentors and life assistance teams, academic tutors, babysitting and so much more. There are four pillars to our program. EDUCATION - A career education--college or trade. MENTORING - Academic (see our free career consultation), emotional, financial and spiritual. COMMUNITY - a single mom support group, community with other student parents, special events just for the moms, and family events. LIFE ASSISTANCE - This team serves as her second "family" and helps with the challenges life brings her way.
