Diamond Leader (STEM Mentor) | job description (university)

The GEMS Camp Diamond Leader is a part-time volunteer position reporting directly to the Camp Site Director perfect for a female university major in any STEM (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics) field. This role will be embraced by an upstanding female college student who can effectively model the 8 Keys of Excellence(r) (integrity, balance, flexibility, speak with good purpose, failure leads to success, commitment, ownership, and this is it!) as campers rotate daily through the 5 Karats - academics, creativity, leadership, service, and career. The Diamond Leader consistently and sincerely serves as a positive role model, academically and socially to all camp participants, especially to their assigned mentees.

DATES: [Dallas & Fort Worth: July 12th - 23rd | Austin & Lubbock: July 26th - August 8th]

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
(Must be available to log in daily during the e-Camp.)

  • Lead small group mentoring sessions following The GEMS Camp 5 Karat Curriculum (c)
  • Maintain communication with middle school girls in between lessons
  • Assist girls with preparing capstone projects for virtual showcase
  • Track personal volunteer hours on a daily basis
  • Be willing to assist some students during office hours
  • Complete daily e-check-outs with parents

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT

  • Help middle school girls to track volunteer hours and duties performed
  • Help middle school girls to generate ideas for a community service project and oversee efforts.

GRADUATION CEREMONY

  • Assemble and present gifts for graduates
  • Help set up and prepare for virtual showcase and graduation ceremony (TBD)

The mission of The GEMS Camp is to change the face of those who can access and excel in STEM studies and careers.

Description

Founded in 2010, The GEMS Camp is one of the few girl-centric organizations founded and led by a Black female STEM educator. The mission of The GEMS Camp is to change the face of those who can access and excel in STEM studies and careers. Using a whole-child approach to STEM education, The GEMS Camp emphasizes building confidence in urban teen girls in five core areas, called the 5 Karat Gems-Academics, Career, Creativity, Leadership, and Service. In the summer of 2010, The GEMS Camp served its first cohort of 30 girls of color. Today, the organization offers four summer programs. To date, The GEMS Camp has served 450 girls. Last, The GEMS Camp was the recipient of the Million Women Mentors-TX Educational Organization Award presented by the Texas Girls Collaborative Project in December of 2020.
