NEXT Village San Francisco

NEXT Village SF is a 501c3 nonprofit organization founded in 2009. Our mission is to provide residents of San Francisco’s northeast corner with the confidence and practical means to live safely and comfortably in their homes and in their community as they age. We are part of the nation-wide Village to Village Network as well as the California Village Movement.

NEXT supports about 200 members by providing a robust social network, educational and cultural events, and volunteer assistance with errands, transportation, and other practical support. During the COVID-19 pandemic, NEXT has made thousands of check-in calls, hosted hundreds of events on Zoom, delivered hundreds of weekly groceries, and distributed thousands of free lunches. Much of this support is provided by a network of over 100 volunteers, coordinated and administered by staff.

NEXT Village does not provide in-home medical or personal care services (medications, assistance with bathing, eating, cleaning). However, many of NEXT’s members reach out to us when they are in need of a referral to home care after a hospitalization or when they need increased support. Information about these resources is scattered and confusing to navigate. Additionally, it is best if people have considered their options before a crisis so they do not end up having to make a decision under pressure. There is a resource book that the City of San Francisco provides as a good starting point for finding providers.

NEXT is looking for an intern to:

  • Research up-to-date resources for home care, post-hospitalization assistance, geriatric care management, requirements for common insurance plans, advanced care directives and other legal planning, making home modifications, public benefits (e.g. IHSS), and local providers.
  • Compile this information in a resource guide using Google Docs. This guide would not only list resources, but would walk people through the steps for making arrangements. The guide would be personalized to NEXT, explaining what services we can provide and those that will require hiring outside help.
  • Help plan an event series that shows people how to use the guide (likely on Zoom). This coordinating dates, creating a slidedeck, and marketing the events.

Qualifications/skills:

  • Comfort with Google Docs, Zoom, and working remotely
  • Interest in supporting older adults aging in place
  • Strong writing and research skills (including comfort with calling organizations for information)
  • Some experience with planning online events preferred, but not required

A small stipened may be available.
