ORGANIZATION: Bethany Christian Services

We are looking for a male volunteer (Spanish-speaking preferred but not necessary) to mentor a 13-year-old refugee from Guatemala living in a foster home in Rockford. This youth has been in Bethany's program since March of 2018. Both of his parents are deceased. He has an older sister in the U.S., but she is unable to care for him.

This youth demonstrates appropriate life skills for his age. He is able to participate in activities and chores around the house. He attends school regularly. He is very interested in automobiles and wants to become a mechanic when he is older. He often works on fixing and building things around the house. He enjoys golfing, being active, being outdoors, loves soccer, working on cars and even built a go-cart. He likes bike rides, scooters, and playing games. He enjoys "the Mandalorian", baby Yoda, and watching funny YouTube videos. This youth dislikes basketball, baseball, and drawing/crafts.

The youth stated in his mentoring survey that activities he is interested in for mentoring include learning new skills, outdoor activities, sports, video games, watching movies, and working on homework.

Mission Statement

Bethany demonstrates the love and compassion of Jesus Christ by protecting children, empowering youth, and strengthening families through quality social services.

Description

For refugees fleeing danger, the search for safety can be extremely challenging. And too often, people become numbers in a system that can feel impossible to navigate. That’s why we guide, protect, advocate for, and support refugees. In the U.S., we offer resettlement and continued support services in strategic locations.

Bethany Christian Services' Refugee and Immigrant Services program encompasses adult and family resettlement as well as refugee foster care for Unaccompanied Children and Unaccompanied Refugee Minors. Our services for unaccompanied refugee youth include case management, counseling, housing (foster homes, group homes, independent living), classes (New Arrival, Life Skills, driver's training), and volunteer mentoring and tutoring.
