We are looking for a male volunteer interested in mentor a 17-year-old refugee from Honduras. This youth has been in the United States for two years, and he is currently living in one of Bethany's group homes on the northeast side of Grand Rapids. He is a 10th grader in ESL classes at a local public school, but he has strong English abilities. This youth is struggling to follow rules and stay on track in the program currently, staff are hoping that a constant, present positive support for him will help motivate him take the action steps needed to prove his independence. Staff also shared, "He has several friends, and when he is in a good mood is very charismatic and likeable. He hopes to be a construction worker someday and he enjoys playing basketball and soccer."

Mission Statement

Bethany demonstrates the love and compassion of Jesus Christ by protecting children, empowering youth, and strengthening families through quality social services.

Description

For refugees fleeing danger, the search for safety can be extremely challenging. And too often, people become numbers in a system that can feel impossible to navigate. That’s why we guide, protect, advocate for, and support refugees. In the U.S., we offer resettlement and continued support services in strategic locations.

Bethany Christian Services' Refugee and Immigrant Services program encompasses adult and family resettlement as well as refugee foster care for Unaccompanied Children and Unaccompanied Refugee Minors. Our services for unaccompanied refugee youth include case management, counseling, housing (foster homes, group homes, independent living), classes (New Arrival, Life Skills, driver's training), and volunteer mentoring and tutoring.
