During this past year, Simply the Basics has been working to meet an increased need for basic hygiene needs. This increased need comes from job loss, financial instability, and so much more.
Simply the Basics partners with Nonprofits all across the nation to provide hygiene kits directly to the community through shelters, housing programs, and other nonprofits that work with individuals or families in need of their basic hygiene needs. We ensure that hygiene kits are equitable and accessible, with some key values being choice, consistency, and dignity.
This is where you come in!
Volunteers are provided the opportunity to either pick up (locally in the Bay Area) or be sent basic hygiene items and our Simply the Basics reusable tote bags to assemble hygiene kits. We will match you with a local nonprofit so once completed, you can drop off the hygiene kits to one of our Nonprofit Receiving partners and see the impact you've made!
Where does the activity take place? The Hygiene Kit Assembly activity will take place either in your home, office, or another location of your choosing. Individuals can either be together in one space or all Zoom in virtually once they have their items picked up/delivered. You also have the option of having a Simply the Basics team member attend virtually to have a thoughtful conversation surrounding homelessness, how to support our neighbors, stigma reduction, and answer honest questions you and your group might have on this significant issue.
Is this activity okay for kids? YES! Our Hygiene Kit Assembly activity is completely customizable and is a great opportunity to engage with children around compassion and our neighbors experiencing homelessness. For groups with kids, we will modify our presentation and provide additional opportunities such as card drawing to put into the Hygiene Kits.
Is there a cost? It costs Simply the Basics about $6.50 per hygiene kit and that doesn't include shipping. While there are opportunities for your group to be sponsored, we hope you will consider making a donation or covering the cost of your activity to ensure accessible and equitable basic hygiene needs for all and to allow Simply the Basics to continue accepting new Nonprofit partners through our waitlist.
The Mission of Simply the Basics is to provide for individuals, organizations, and communities their most basic needs with dignity so that they can focus on bigger goals. We simply remove barriers, allowing people to have the opportunity to achieve.
Simply the Basics is inspired by Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, the philosophy that people are unable to focus on any needs higher than their current level on the following pyramid. If they are unable to meet needs at the very basic level (food, shelter, clothing, education, and hygiene), they will be incapable of moving up in the pyramid to reach greater goals (job security, sobriety, mental and physical health, and self actualization).
By alleviating the struggle to meet a most basic need, a person can achieve independence in other areas. By removing the barrier of finding the next meal or safe place to sleep, securing hygiene products, and meeting any other basic human needs...People are given the Opportunity to Achieve.
