Position Summary

We are seeking committed people who want to make a difference in the lives of people with disabilities. This position offers a career pathway to permanent jobs in the human services field. You can work with disabled children or adults. The position involves teaching work, life, and basic skills as well as empowering our individuals to advocate for themselves.

The AmeriCorps program provides a professional mentoring experience for individuals who are committed to helping others. It is ideal for recent high school and college graduates, retirees, people seeking a change in career, and those who have been out of the work force.

Our program creates a supportive framework for adults and youth with disabilities to live independently as contributing members of society. YOU can make a difference today by helping our disabled kids and adults.

What is AmeriCorps?

The Utica Municipal Housing Authority is seeking applicants for our AmeriCorps program. We have Summer, Year Round, Full-Time/Part-Time, and Day/Evening positions. Openings are available in Utica, Rome, and Central New York.

AmeriCorps is a paid national service volunteer position. It provides a great opportunity to serve others while gaining professional experience. It is a stepping stone to a career in the human services. It is also ideal for recent high school and college graduates retired people, persons seeking a career change, people with employment gaps, individuals with disabilities, ex-offenders, and those who want to make positive change in their community. Our AmeriCorps program helps people get out of poverty through housing/homeless assistance, financial literacy/life skills education, veteran services, teaching disabled kids life and job skills, and assisting veterans. We are also seeking people with digital graphic, public relations, and artistic skills to develop curriculum and outreach materials for targeted client populations.

Qualifications

1, Must be at least 17 years old; 2. Must have a minimum of a High School diploma or GED/HSED or enrolled in a GED program; 3. Must be willing to serve until December 31, 2021.4. Must work 15-35 hours per week; 5. Criminal background checks and drug testing required; 6. We will check your social media; 7. Computer literacy is necessary. 8. Must get along with others and together as part of a team. 9. Passion to help others and change society. 10. Commitment to homeless, people with disabilities, and low-income people. 11. Must have positive social media experience 12. Commitment to empower persons with disabilities. 13. Ability to lift 50 pounds. 14. Able to help people with daily skills and personal needs.

Duties of AmeriCorps Members

Help older disabled youth and adults prepare for careers and get jobs; Provide one-to-one assistance in independent life skills.

AmeriCorps members will will help families and disabled youth to develop independent living, self-advocacy, and self-determination skills. Members will youth gain independent living skills via a wide range of resources. You will help our individuals access community resources such as jobs and independent living skills.

Through this program, the AmeriCorps member will explore career options in human services, social work, and disability services and enter a career pathway to future employment and education.

Benefits:

Full-time members receive a living allowance of $14,279 on an annual basis (about $540 before taxes every two weeks). You must agree to serve until December 31. Segal AmeriCorps Education Award before taxes upon successful completion of 1700/1200/900/675/450/300 hours, student loan forbearance, Health insurance, child care benefits, and work-related travel reimbursement, if eligible. AmeriCorps income is not counted for HUD rental assistance or SNAP. For 1700 hour members, college award is $6,345, 1200 hours $4,441.50, and 900 hours - $3,172.50

The name of the building which houses our administrative offices is the Perretta Twin Towers, two ten story towers. Please use the entrance on your left which is marked "Municipal Housing Authority." There is a flagpole by the entrance. Our offices are located on the first floor.

The building, across from the BOCES ACCESS Center, is located between Elizabeth and Bleecker Streets, Downtown Utica.

Mission Statement

The mission of Central New York Community Solutions is to develop, maintain, and enhance decent, safe and affordable living environments that foster stability and increase self-sufficiency for people with low incomes. It is the nonprofit affiliate corporation of the Municipal Housing Authority of the City of Utica, New York that provides homelessness prevention and rehousing, supportive services, financial literacy, homeownership counseling, job development, and veteran services. Established in 1937, the Utica Housing Authority is Utica's largest landlord, a major developer of affordable housing in Central New York, and provider of high quality resident and community supportive services.

Description

Self-Sufficiency Housing Resource Center is a one stop housing navigator center that seeks to provide housing and information referral services to 150 per year through housing counseling, referrals, and application assistance. The center provides free information assistance, referral, advocacy, and support to individuals and families who need help finding and maintaining their housing, particularly low-income, homeless, and housing unstable people. We help people access affordable housing/rental assistance programs, find homeless people temporary and permanent housing, provide tenant responsibility education, help to prevent evictions and foreclosures, assist first-time homebuyers to purchase their first homes, and offer assistance to homeowners seeking home improvement grants and loans. We also provide other self-sufficiency services such as financial literacy and job placement. The Resource Center is operated by the staff as well as AmeriCorps members assigned to the Municipal Authority of the City of Utica, New York. It has developed partnerships with local public and private agencies to deliver effective services. It is a project of Housing Authority's new nonprofit affiliate corporation - Central New York Community Solutions, Inc. (CNYCS). CNYCS was formed to help the housing authority to diversify its funding base and reduce its reliance on government funding programs.
