Proofreader for Book Publishing - Poetry
Community Literature Initiative
Quick Overview: Community Literature Initiative (CLI) is seeking volunteer Proofreaders to assist with book production. With the support of our staff, you play a pivotal role in coordinating with authors and designers to ensure accurate typeset proofs.
Impact: The 10-week CLI Publishing Class culminates with students experiencing the book production process first-hand. The focus of the final weeks of the course is guiding and supporting approximately 40 students in self-publishing their manuscripts. The Proofreader will work with 4 poets to help bring their dreams to reality.
Volunteer Roles & Responsibilities: The Proofreader Volunteer will detect and correct discrepancies between original poetry manuscrips and typeset proofs. Responsibilities include:
Read content and suggest edits in copy and layout
Communicate with authors and publishing staff
Meet proofreading deadlines
Proven work experience as a Proofreader, Content Editor, Web Editor or similar role
Excellent writing and editing skills
Meticulous attention to detail
Familiarity with Trello and/or ability to learn new software
Additional Information: This is a virtual role. Must be available to work on 4-5 projects during May and June with possible need for quick turn-around. Hours listed as 9AM-1PM are for meeting availability. Actual proofreading work can be accomplished according to volunteer's availability.

A non-profit organization dedicated to teaching writers of color how to write and publish books.
We are currently looking for graphic designers (cover and layout design) and proofreaders for upcoming book publishing. These are seasonal/ project based roles. Additionally, CLI has opened the Sims Library of Poetry and is in need of Staff Writers and a Blog Manager to assist with Social Media. And we are looking for Library Assistants to help with library maintenance as well as cataloging poetry books.
