Queen of Hearts Thoroughbred Retirement Farm

Winter...rain...wind.snow..wreaks havok on a horse farm! We have trees that have fallen, fences that need repair, rocks and debris that need to be raked, old hay that needs to be raked up.... Here at Queen of Hearts Thoroughbred Retirement, it takes all day every day to just provide the basic care and maintenance for the horses. In order to clean up the farm after the winter, we will need a great crew of energetic, motivated and cheerful volunteers to help!

If you have a green thumb, we can even plant some flowers and do some minor landscaping projects to try to make the farm a beautiful place for the horses and the people who come to visit the horses can enjoy.

This is a great opportunity either for a single person to work at little by little, or for a group of people to come out and spend a day to get things done!

About Queen of Hearts Thoroughbred Retirement

Location:

521 Owl's Nest Rd, Shapleigh, ME 04076, US

Mission Statement

Our Mission is to provide a safe place for thoroughbreds to go after their racing days are over. When a thoroughbred's career is over, he often needs to be relocated quickly. By providing a safe haven, these horses will have a place to go. The horses will be rested, rehabilitated and retrained for new careers as show horses, eventing horses, trail horses, pleasure horses or simply companion horses. Those whose injuries or temperments prevent them from finding a suitable new home will be given sanctuary here at the farm.

Description

QHTR currently provides sanctuary for ten thoroughbreds. We are hoping to expand the facility in order to take in more at risk thoroughbreds who will be rehabilitated, retrained, and eligible for adoption to carefully screened applicants. With further expansion, we also hope to be able to offer sanctuary to more horses who have nowhere else to go. Most horses come to us directly from the raceterack, but once we have a quarantine barn we will be able to expand our efforts to rescue horses from auctions.
