VITA in Action

Interested in helping your local community file their tax returns for free? Come join the East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation’s (EBALDC’s) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and volunteer to support this free program for Bay Area residents. This volunteer role will h elp provide free tax assistance to people with low-to-moderate income, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, those with limited English proficiency, and others who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. VITA volunteers will work directly with the VITA Site Coord inator to support clients, schedule appointments, and maintain site flow.


Responsibilities:

  • Answer phone calls and questions related to our VITA program such as eligibility, required do cumentation, and appointment hours .
  • Scheduling client appointments .
  • Encourage clients to save a portion of their tax refund in a savings account , as a savings bond, or secured debit card .
  • Read all provided program communications and updates.
  • Maintain confidentiality of taxpayer private information .
  • Ensure and uphold that no compensation of any kind is accepted for volunteer services provided .
  • Provide 24-hour cancellation notice when unable to volunteer.

Qualifications :

  • Ability to v olunteer one shift per week (4 hours) during our volunteer shifts (see below ) through the week of May 17, 2021.
  • With provided training, p ass the Standard of Conduct and Intake/Interview & Quality Review certifications require of the VITA program.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills .
  • Warm interpersonal skills and comfort with a wide range of people .
  • Ability to take initiative and work with minimal supervision
  • C omputer literacy with experience using multiple applications (including Word, Excel, and Google Apps) can be useful.
  • Bilingual in English and Cantonese, Mandarin or Spanish a plus!

Volunteer schedule shifts: 

Tuesdays and Thursdays: 1pm-4pm

Tuesdays and Thursdays: 4pm-8pm

Saturdays and Sundays: 10am-2pm

Saturdays and Sundays: 1:30pm-5:30pm
