A and precious pup wanted to provide pet therapy hospice patients

Encompass Hospice in Marshall County, Al is looking for caring people with gentle dogs who want to share the love of their pets in our "Paws for Comfort" program for hospice patients.

We will train the owner to be a hospice volunteer so you both can visit patients together! We have patients who can benefit from visits from furry friends. Desired time commitment is approximately 3-4 hours per month but is flexible to your schedule and time.

Dog requirements are listed below but are not limited to: (a full list can be obtained from Volunteer Coordinator)

Dogs who has been certified by a Veterinarian to be medically fit including general dental health and to have the appropriate temperament to remain calm. Has received certification from an Obedience School, with documentation of successfully completing obedience training. Are current with all required vaccinations. Are at least 1 year old, not in heat, and must be bathed and well-groomed prior to making visits.

Handler Requirements

All handlers are required to meet all volunteer requirements, including but not limited to orientation, documentation and complying with company policies.

All costs for pet health care, including the initial exam will be the responsibility of the pet owner/handler. The dog must be under the direct and continuous supervision and control of the volunteer handler at all times.

NO medical experience needed, volunteers DO NOT perform "hands on" care. Volunteer commitment is flexible to volunteer’s schedule. Volunteers are welcome to provide assistance during the day, after hours, or on weekends. All training and orientation is provided free of charge by Encompass Hospice. The Volunteer Coordinator will mentor volunteers until they comfortable and confident to volunteer independently.

Direct Patient Support Volunteers must complete the application and orientation processes and be over the age of 14. All Jr. Volunteers ages 14 to 18 must complete all training, background screenings and trained parent and/or guardian must accompany Jr. Volunteers. Most of the orientation process can be completed online or via phone. Additionally reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, auto insurance and other requirements apply.
