Nyamboyo Technical School Overview

NTS a not-for-profit 3-year vocational school located in the Nyamboyo Village in southwestern Kenya. We provide professional, technical education to the economically disadvantaged teens and young adults of the community. Our students are ages 14-20 and all have family histories of poverty, lack of education and job opportunities, and chronic food insecurity. At NTS, they receive professional vocational training, 3 meals a day to combat hunger and malnutrition, English-language classes, computer training, and daily COVID-safe sports activities. Our students thrive professionally, physically, and psychologically.

Swahili to English Translator
School has resumed in Kenya after a second COVID quarantine. We have expanded to 80 students with the goal of increasing to 125 as soon as COVID restrictions are lifted. While English is an official language of Kenya, our community is more fluent in Swahili. We write our material in English and then must translate it. In our community, parent-school communication is critical but our parents do not speak English. When parents understand the importance of education, they make sure their children attend school rather than sending them to work as unskilled, poorly paid day laborers.

So, we are looking for a translator to help with materials that currently range from letters to parents, community and school flyers, newsletters, and handbooks. You MUST be a native Swahili speaker who has translation experience and understands how to make the many cultural changes necessary as you move from one language to another. Google Translate does not work for translating this material. This is NOT a training opportunity for someone interested in learning how to translate.

You will be making a vital contribution to our students and their families, as well as helping us expand our reach within the community.

Description

NTS a not-for-profit 3-year vocational school located in the Nyamboyo Village in southwestern Kenya. We provide professional, technical education to the economically disadvantaged teens and young adults of the community. Our students are ages 14-20 and all have family histories of poverty, lack of education and job opportunities, and chronic food insecurity. At NTS, they receive professional vocational training, 3 meals a day to combat hunger and malnutrition, English-language classes, computer training, and daily COVID-safe sports activities. They also participate in school-run businesses, learning how to become business owners and making money while in school. Our students thrive professionally, physically, and psychologically.

Ultimately, we are building a positive, prosperous future for our youth, as employees, small business owners, and serial entrepreneurs!

NTS is led by Executive Director, Jones Obiria, a native of Nyamboro, who founded the school because he felt an obligation to lead after he, himself was able to escape poverty through the gift of education. Here in the U.S., a small, dedicated team of two are working to help raise awareness and funds for NTS. In Jones’ words "People save their own lives. Our job is to provide the opportunity. I hope you will join our journey."
