Dear Volunteer,

Thank you for your interest in assisting our growing organization. We at Cameras For Girls are a young organization and we are seeking assistance to help us find fundraising avenues to keep our programming going.

Covid impacted our ability to train our girls in person and thus we are seeking funds to train online and continue building our video library.

You will be a part of a diverse organization, that seeks to empower girls and women in Uganda with photography and business skills. These skills help them get a job in a male-dominated, and highly unemployed society.

We seek a volunteer with fundraising experience or a volunteer with awesome research skills. The role includes the following:

  • seek out suitable grants both domestic and international, for us to apply to;
  • complete the spreadsheet with grant information, links, application dates, and requirements for fulfilling the grant;
  • great if you can write a grant application but not necessary for this role.

The position will be virtual and time is flexible.

Mission Statement

Cameras For Girls is a non-profit initiative born out of the sheer will to alleviate poverty for girls and women in 3rd world countries using photography as our medium. Every year we teach photography and business skills to girls and women studying journalism in Uganda. We raise funds to purchase new and used cameras for the girls and teach them to use the camera to tell stories that matter to them. This tool helps the girls learn a new skill, advance their journalism careers, improve their options, and change their lives. Since 2018, Cameras For Girls has worked solely in Uganda but has plans to expand our training to other countries where girls and women can benefit from this training.

Description

History: We came up with the idea to teach photography to local girls in Uganda in August 2017, and by August 2018, after raising funds to purchase cameras, we went to Uganda to train 15 young girls and women, endeavoring to become journalists. The founder and her family immigrated to Canada from Uganda in 1972. She started CFG in August 2017. Goals: Our goals are to train 30 young women each year; In a country with a very high unemployment rate and gender inequality, our goal is to advocate for gender rights and poverty alleviation. Programs: Our program runs over 3-days in-country + 2 days for field practice. After the founder returns to Canada, she teaches the girls via video tutorials, bi-weekly discussions, monthly assignments, and zoom meetings to discuss challenges. She then helps the girls compete for jobs with a properly written resume, cover letter, and Linkedin profile. Achievements: To date, we have taught 32 girls, and 11 now have full-time jobs. COVID impacted our ability to do in-person training, but we continue to develop ways to teach and assists the girls for job creation.
