We are looking for bilingual Burmese/English volunteers to serve Burmese-speaking communities in Oregon, and potentially throughout the US. Volunteers will be tasked to do translation and interpretation, run Torus social media specifically for Burmese speakers, provide access to resources for Burmese-speaking communities, be a Torus liaison, recruitment of English learners, and more. Due to COVID19, everything will be done online.

Volunteers do not have to participate in all Torus Ambassador roles.

Torus Ambassador

Language Meetup

  • Facilitate language meetups virtually on Zoom for around 1 hour every week
  • The individuals in these meetups are not English learners but people who want to learn other languages such as Russian, Japanese, Spanish, etc.
  • Approximately 1.5-2 hours per week for preparation and the session

Liaison with community members in the Torus English class program

  • Facilitate a Whatsapp group chat consisting of people from different language backgrounds that are currently English learners in our program
  • Communicate information with English learners in their native language and relay information to Torus
  • Develop relationships with the community of the learner to become a bridge between the organization and the learner’s community
  • Approximately 1 hour per week.

Translation and interpretation

  • Working with community members and local organizations to give translation and interpretation services
  • Approximately 1 hour per week

Torus was founded in 2020 by a refugee who was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, raised in Moscow, Russia, and lives in Portland, Oregon. Torus bridges gaps between people and communities by facilitating transformative experiences of language and culture exchange. We do this work through our seven programs. We believe in connectivity and a sense of belonging to a community for immigrants and refugees, as well as anyone who has been living in the US for generations.
