Your view matters!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A disaster occurs. Trained Red Cross volunteers respond with immediate aid and comfort. But even after the disaster, we still help. This is where YOU come in.
Following local disasters - the Red Cross helps our clients during their recovery phase by collecting damage assessment information. In this volunteer role as a Damage Assessment Service Associate, you will conduct in-the-field damage assessment reviews and provide interpretation for properly concerned parties and Individual Assistance Providers (IAPs.) This includes gathering information from multiple sources (in-person, over the telephone, via email, etc.) and through first-hand observation of disaster scenes. You will also collaborate with fellow Red Cross volunteers and colleagues in the recording of impact and damage data.
Cooperating with your Volunteer Manager, specific responsibilities include:
- Gathering preliminary and on-going impact assessment information from multiple sources and via multi communication avenues.
- Defining areas of known damage through in-the-field confirmation of the initial virtual assessments, providing that input to facilitate the creation of the Preliminary Damage Assessment (PDA).
- Completing in-the-field Detailed Damage Assessments (DDAs) and supporting data entry of damage assessments information into required systems of record.
- Notifying Chapter and Regional staff to significant events and contributing to appropriate reports.
- Attending regularly scheduled meetings and training.
- Other duties as discussed.
Qualifications:
- Ability to learn and follow established damage assessment procedures.
- Ability to collect and organize data along with proficiency using Red Cross systems and online interfaces (free training provided.)
- Commitment to the mission of the Red Cross, including values, fundamental principles, etc.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, including telephone and computer skills needed to gather impact and preliminary damage assessment information.
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in complex and potentially stressful situations.
- Physically able to stand and/or sit for long periods of time (Including at disaster scenes, on the telephone, on a computer, etc.), walk on uneven terrain, spend hours writing and reading, climb two or more flights of stairs, read maps and follow directions, and can drive day or night.
