Our volunteers are a big part of the #Dallas90 family - helping us to increase the number of lives we save, improve the quality of life of the animals in our shelter, and educate our community to help Dallas become home to the nation’s best pet owners. Read more about our #BeDallas90 campaign on our website: www.bedallas90.org.
Treat for Calm is an activity specifically focused on the quality of life aspect of our work. The goal is to create a calmer, quieter shelter, reducing the stress experienced by all of our in-shelter pets.Treat for Calm volunteers will walk through the kennels using positive reinforcement operant conditioning techniques to reinforce calm behavior from the dogs in the kennels. Volunteers will be walking past the kennel doors, and when dogs are observed with all four paws on the floor and no barking or other audible noise is being made, they will say "good" and toss a treat under the door.
This position is perfect for volunteers of all ages because it doesn't involve any direct handling of our dogs. Volunteers in this position will not be entering kennels or removing dogs from kennels; all engagement will take place through the kennel door. It's also a great way for our junior volunteers to start to learn about dog behavior. Treat for Calm shifts are available daily, in one-hour blocks starting at 4:00 pm & 5:00 pm, but volunteers are welcome to sign up for back-to-back time slots for a longer experience.
Volunteers will need to apply through our website, take an online New Volunteer Orientation, and attend an in-person Welcome Session prior to their first volunteer shift. Due to COVID, our in-person Welcome Sessions are limited to one person or one household, so scheduling is limited. Volunteers must commit to 4 hours per month for a minimum of 6 months.

Mission Statement
Our vision is to lead the nation in compassionate care of animals while finding positive outcomes for all placeable pets through innovative shelter operations and community engagement.
Description
Our Plan
Dallas90 is a community outreach campaign designed to generate support of and participation in DAS' effort to find positive outcomes for all healthy and behaviorally sound pets, which we believe exceeds 90% of our shelter population.
Our Progress
For the first time in our organization's history, DAS exceeded a 90% live release rate (number of animals leaving the shelter with a live outcome) in December 2018. This was achieved while also bringing in a record number of loose dogs from the community. However, this live release rate is not yet sustainable; we need the help of our community to continue to save as many lives as possible.
