John Ball Zoo is looking for someone that has worked with PVC, and is confident in their skills to build items from PVC based on provided descriptions and/or instructions to create enrichment for the animals!
Animal Care Staff throughout the Zoo offer items (called enrichment) to our animals that encourage species typical behaviors. This can include a wide range of items from balls that are strong enough for bears to push around, to puzzle feeders with fun treats inside that encourage our primates to problem solve. Check out our video below for our Otters using some PVC puzzle feeders (at minute 4:18)!
This volunteer opportunity will be project based. PVC tubes will be provided. Glues and tools will need to be supplied by the volunteer. Builder will work closely with JBZoo Enrichment Coordinator on project design and requirements but project will be completed at home.
Requires ability to work with schedule 40 (white) PVC tubes, PVC cutting devices, and PVC glues
Must be able to cut PVC of various diameters (up to 10" in diameter), drill holes up to a few inches in diameter, use a sander to smooth PVC edges
Ability to cut rectangular cutouts in larger PVC tubes is a bonus
