Program/Department Overview:

Refugee Services has provided direct employment services to local refugee populations for over 40 years. These services are offered to refugees, political asylees, Cuban and Haitian entrants, certified victims of human trafficking, and other work-authorized immigrants. Services include job search assistance, resume and interview preparation, cultural orientation, pre-employment vocational English language classes, job placement and follow-up, and post-employment support. Over 80% of our participants are hired per year and our 90% job retention rate is higher than similar job placement agencies in Boston. To achieve these outcomes, JVS partners with over 1,400 employers in hospitality, retail, agriculture, education, health care, sales, manufacturing, and business; and supports participants in finding and maintaining gainful employment that can lead to successful careers.

Training Overview:
The JVS Food Service Training Program trains students to be successful employees in the Food and Customer Service industry. The students spend three weeks at JVS learning about handling food and food safety. Then students then spend 3 weeks with hands-on training in a kitchen setting in order to get real-life experience to prepare them for jobs once the training is completed. The Food Service Training program began in 1998 and has prepared 41 cohorts of students for careers in the food service industry. Upon completion of the training, all students complete the ServSafe certification exam, which is highly recognized throughout the US in food establishments.

Responsibilities:

For the first 3 weeks of class training at JVS, the volunteer will assist the instructor with classroom lessons and computer test sessions. Curriculum and lesson materials are prepared by JVS staff, but the volunteer will need to be comfortable familiarizing themselves with the material beforehand.

For the remaining 3 weeks of the training, the class instructor and class assistants will assist clients onsite at our employer partner, Shake Shack from 9:30am-12:20pm, Monday-Thursday.

Prior knowledge of these subjects is not required, just a willingness to learn and assist a group of 12-15 students independently - facilitating discussions and activities. Dedicated, encouraging, open-minded, able to communicate with people who have limited English.

  • MUST SHOW PROOF OF COVID VACCINATION
  • Ability to work with a variety of multicultural adult learners.
  • Ability to work as part of a team with staff, volunteers and interns.
