The COVID-19 crisis continues to exacerbate the need for essential items for families in homeless and low-income situations. As Cradles to Crayons is currently unable to welcome large groups of volunteers to The Giving Factory to work toward meeting the critical needs of the families we serve, we have created a new opportunity to bring our volunteer experience to you remotely: Giving Factory @ Home! Through Giving Factory @Home, Cradles to Crayons offers activities for you and your family to continue helping us provide essential items to local kids from the safety of your home. These activities replicate volunteer stations we would normally facilitate in the warehouse. We cycle through different activities based on where we have the greatest need, and each of them is extremely helpful to us. Each Giving Factory @Home activity requires picking up donations from The Giving Factory at 4141 West George Street in Chicago and returning them to that same location when finished. We will provide all of the donations and instructions necessary to complete your activity, and all donations have been quarantined for at least 72 hours. If this opportunity sounds like a good fit for you, please let me know so I can schedule a time for you to pick up! We offer pickups on the following days: Mondays -10am to 12pmTuesdays -10am to 12pmWednesdays -1:30pm to 3:30pmThursdays -1:30pm to 3:30pmFridays -10am to 12pm.
Cradles to Crayons provides children from birth through age 12 living in homeless or low-income situations with the essential items they need to thrive - at home, at school and at play. We supply these items free of charge by engaging and connecting communities that have with communities that need.
Started in 2002 in Boston then moving to Philadelphia in 2007, Cradles to Crayons opens our third site right here in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago. We are built by the community in which we stay. Gently used donations of the items we distribute (including clothing, shoes, toys, books, etc.) come into our Giving Factory from families, businesses hosting drives, churches, etc. Volunteers then have the opportunity to sort, organize, quality check, and pack up KidPacks which are individually placed requests from our partner organizations in the cities that we serve. We accept volunteers as young as 5 years old and have volunteer shifts most Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and weekends.
