Public Invention: Moonrat Project Engineering Volunteer

ORGANIZATION: PUBLIC INVENTION

  • 6 people are interested

Water-borne disease is the leading cause of infectious death globally, killing 3.4 million people every year. Public Invention is trying to help solve the global clean water problem. Part of this problem revolves around difficulty testing for safe drinking water sources. Normally, analysis is done in a laboratory setting due in large part to the requirement for incubation, which currently can only be done in large, expensive laboratory-grade incubators. In developing countries, laboratory facilities are either unavailable or require transport of samples, which can delay analysis for hours or even days beyond EPA and WHO standards. Our goal is to build the best, cheapest, most reliable, most portable incubator for detecting bacterial contamination on-site, in the field, without having to send samples to a distant laboratory and we need your help.

Public Invention is looking for volunteers to support one of our projects, Project #51: Moonrat: A Portable Incubator . Ideal candidates will be comfortable with one or more of the following technical capabilities: microelectronics, 3D design, Arduino programming, electro-mechanical design, OpenSCAD programming. Candidates should also be passionate about humanitarian service and be able to dedicate 4 hours per week to supporting the efforts of Public Invention.

Qualifications:

  • Experience with 3D design, Arduino programming, electro-mechanical design, and/or OpenSCAD programming (required)
  • Basic understanding of heat flow
  • Familiarity with or ability to learn quickly open source tools such as git
  • Self-motivated to drive tasks forward and seek guidance when necessary (required)
  • Current college student or recent graduate (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Participate in weekly meetings to discuss project progress and challenges
  • Actively maintain a github repository and produce demonstrations of functional milestones throughout work on project
  • Complete 3D-design of an enclosure for a small Arduino class micro controller
  • If interested, please submit your resume and a statement of interest to admin@pubinv.org.

About PUBLIC INVENTION

Location:

1709 NORRIS DR, AUSTIN, TX 78704, US

Mission Statement

We empower inventors, technologists, and students to publish, find, and collaborate on invention ideas for the good of humanity through direct coaching, team formation, curation of work, publication, co-working and learning events, and material support.

Description

We challenge the notion that inventions should be reserved for patents and profits. Rather, we invite fellow builders of the future to use their skills for humanitarian purpose. We want to make the future better for everyone. To do this we remove, rather than add, legal barriers to the free use of our inventions. All work done with Public Invention is free and open to all under share-alike public licenses.

The Public Inventor of the future is not a lone genius but a person who is part of a community. We empower Public Invention Teams that embrace the interdisciplinary talents that combine to shape the future: inventiveness, design, writing, art, photography, engineering, administration, fundraising, and other skills we cannot predict. All of our work is in service to nurture humanitarian invention.

Recently, much of our work has been focused on our VentMon project, which works to improve pandemic ventilators in the fight against COVID-19. With that, we are working on an oxygen concentrator project. However, we are also working on non-pandemic related projects, such as Moonrat and Rapid E. Coli projects (clean water projects) and Euler Notebook (a stylus-oriented notebook for mathematics and science), among others. We are always looking to take on new and exciting projects working with inventors around the globe.
