There are many opportunities for military volunteers to serve hospice patients in Etowah County. Volunteerism is flexible to volunteer’s schedule, and to the types of volunteer work preferred by volunteer.
We are looking for Veterans or active duty military to honor and provide companionship to hospice Veterans at their homes at least once a month for a couple hours. You can volunteer as a group or on your own. Family members of veterans are welcome to serve too.
We have patients who are Veterans that would like to have another Veteran/Military companion for veteran-to-veteran comradery. In addition, we also have Veteran patients whose caregivers need brief relief. Volunteers would make visits in order to allow a caregiver the opportunity to leave the home for a short period of time (a couple of hours). This gives caregivers a small break and the opportunity to run errands. Respite volunteers do not provide medical care or "hands on" care to patients; volunteers are only there to keep a patient company during the absence of their caregiver.
Volunteers are also needed to assist with honoring hospice veterans with veteran pinning ceremonies, and delivering veteran certificates. At Enhabit, we appreciate our Veteran patients and desire for them to receive full care, honor and dignity at the end of their lives. No Veteran should die alone.
Direct Patient Support Volunteers must complete the application, a hospice volunteer orientation, background screenings, and an introduction to specific Veteran issues at the end of life. Most of the orientation process can be completed online or via phone. Additionally reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and other requirements apply. The volunteer coordinator mentors all volunteers until they comfortable and confident to be independent. If you think this is something you would enjoy please contact me! I look forward to hearing from you today!
