A N I X T E R C E N T E R - LITERACY PROGRAM
The first and only program of its kind in Chicago,
serving learners of all abilities with disabilities, the
Jack Ehrlich Literacy Program has been a leader in
adult literacy for over 25 years. Funded by the
Secretary of State, the literacy program is designed to
strengthens the reading, writing, math, and computer
skills of adult learners with disabilities so that they
may live in the community more independently,
prepare for a competitive job, and experience
enhanced quality of life. Volunteer tutors provide
curriculum based virtual and in person instructional
sessions with the goal of supporting adult learners
with their individualized goals. We use the SORT-R at
intake to assess the literacy skills of each adult learner
at the time they enter the program.

LITERACY PROGRAM
ELIGIBILITY
* Have a disability.
* Be 18 years of age or older.
* Be able to commit up to one hour each week to meet with tutor virtually or in person.
* Have the ability to meet tutor at agreed upon location.
* No minimum reading level or experience required.
* Have access to a computer or tablet if choosing to meet virtually.

Anixter Center has access to tablet’s should learners need
them. Through our lending library, tablets are circulated
in 4-month cycles. Learners and agency partners are
asked to sign an agreement to ensure property is
returned undamaged.
