We could not be what we are or accomplish what we do without our volunteers. Join us in pursuing our mission to preserve and promote the arts, history, and culture of Portsmouth and the Seacoast.
Greeters are the first people our visitors see when they walk in the door, and they are responsible for welcoming and orienting guests. Greeters assess why visitors have come to PHS, and then assist them in learning more about what we have to offer, and what is available in the city of Portsmouth. They also run our Portsmouth History video, make sure the foyer is tidy and stocked with event cards, and assist the shop manager and front desk staff in keeping the shop stocked and clean.
Docents are stationed in the galleries and are there to help guests have the best possible experience of the exhibition. Docents understand the exhibitions and the objects in them and can help answer questions for guests, as well as point them to additional resources. Docents also help to keep the objects in the gallery safe, and they remind guests of museum expectations.

The Portsmouth Historical Society is a place where we share history, culture, and art with our community and visitors.
Description
The Portsmouth Historical Society has two buildings and one gallery. We are a visitor center, historical house museum, and a gallery of several exhibitions each season. We are open seasonally from April through December. We are seeking volunteers for our gallery, historical house, and welcome center. We provide walking tours, house tours, art, local information and events, and information about history of Portsmouth.
