National Volunteer Week 2021 Is Here!
Celebrate with us as we highlight #ArtAsActivism!
STEM Coding Lab is Pittsburgh's only nonprofit exclusively devoted to providing computer science (CS) education to our region's under-resourced youth. We provide CS classes to students in grades K-12 in after school and in-school settings as well as summer programming. This summer, STEM Coding Lab is seeking assistance with its new summer program, entitled CS Explorers.
CS Explorers is a six-week summer enrichment opportunity for Pittsburgh middle school students, during which, the students will be exposed to a weeks long overview of six computer science themes - artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, animation, data analytics, advanced manufacturing, and cybersecurity. The investigation of each theme will happen over the course of four days.
The first day will be a "101" overview - i.e. what is artificial intelligence? How does it manifest itself in every day life? - provided by STEM Coding Lab instructors. The second day will feature an expert volunteer from Pittsburgh's tech industry - practitioners from Google, Uber, Duolingo, and more - will share their story, the path they took to get their job, and more. The third day will be an experiential exercise, during which kids will learn, for instance, how to code their own robot or animate their own short story. And day four will be a field trip to the workplace of the day two volunteer.
STEM Coding Lab is looking for enthusiastic volunteer instructors to help support our programming on days one and three. Volunteers will be asked to assist with instruction, team-based learning activities, and more. Volunteers are a crucial asset in our effort to inspire, engage, and help young people grow.
No additional volunteer opportunities at this time.

STEM Coding Lab's mission is to provide children learning in underresourced communities with access to computer science education to better prepare them to compete in the digital world.
STEM Coding Lab is the only Pittsburgh nonprofit devoted exclusively to bringing computer science education into under-resourced schools throughout our region. In providing expert instruction for both in-school and after-school settings, the work of STEM Coding Lab is designed to activate the next generation of digitally literate STEM professionals and expose those students learning in underfunded environments to lessons that will prepare them to compete in the 21st Century.
At STEM Coding Lab, we believe that early student development of basic computer science skills is a critical first step in addressing income disparities that persist throughout our city, particularly in majority-minority neighborhoods. Moreover, we believe that pursuit of racial and social justice should begin in classrooms by empowering under-resourced students with the skills needed to break cycles of generational poverty.
STEM Coding Lab works with the Pittsburgh Public School District, as well as a variety of charter schools and afterschool programs, to provide both in-school and after-school CS classes. Our goal for in-school classes is to assist teachers to integrate coding into their everyday classes - regardless of their subject area expertise.
