ORGANIZATION: JVS, Jewish Vocational Service

The ESOL Classes meet Monday & Wednesday 5:30-7pm EST, but we respectfully request volunteers to volunteer at least one class week.

JVS works with employers to develop and customize training and education services for their employees at their location. Based on the employers’ business and workforce development goals, JVS will provide: English language classes (for non-native speakers), adult basic education, pre-college classes, customer service training, effective communication classes, supervisory training, computer classes, and medical terminology classes. Employer partners include CVS, Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates, Legal Sea Foods, Hebrew Senior Life Mass General Hospital, Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital, and many more.
Healthcare Training Institute (HTI) Workplace ESOL classes are offered to hospital employees who are non-native speakers of English. The goal of the class is to improve English language skills for work and daily life. Lessons are contextualized to the hospital setting.

Responsibilities:

The volunteer will assist with taking attendance, observing and participating in full class activities, leading breakout groups, and providing feedback to students. All materials and activities will be created by the instructor. If interested, the volunteer may choose to create some warm up or discussion activities under guidance from the instructor.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Clear spoken and written English communication skills
  • Interest in supporting people of various linguistic, cultural, religious, ethnic and national backgrounds
  • Experience tutoring nonnative speakers is a plus but not required
  • Comfortable with Zoom basics
