The School Volunteer Association of Bridgeport, Inc. is a non-profit organization that provides volunteer services to Bridgeport's public schools. The School Volunteer Association recruits, trains and places volunteers, and also raises funds to support programs for city students.
The mission of the School Volunteer Association of Bridgeport, Inc. is to enrich and support the learning of Bridgeport's public school students through the involvement of volunteers from Bridgeport and surrounding communities.
The goals of the School Volunteer Association of Bridgeport, Inc. are to increase community participation in school volunteer programs and to foster in the greater Bridgeport community constructive interests in and support for the city schools.
Reading Enrichment: Volunteers read aloud to classes on a weekly, semi-monthly or monthly basis for approximately 30 minutes. Books are supplied by the organization and donated to the classroom by the reader.
Book Buddy: A volunteer listens to a child read for 10-15 minutes, giving help as needed. This helps the student boost self-esteem and hone reading skills.(30 minutes - 1 hour commitment)
Reading/Math Tutors: Tutors work one-on-one or in small groups reinforcing skills under the direction of the classroom teachers. Books and materials are provided by the School Volunteer Association. (1 hr/wk)
Mentors-Mentors are paired with students in grades 3-8. The objective is to be a consistent, caring adult in the life of a child. This is a school-based program.(1 hr/wk)
All programs run during the school day.
