Teaching English to monks is an excellent opportunity for volunteers who are interested in Buddhism and culture. Volunteers will also have a wonderful opportunity to learn the Vajrayana form of Buddhism and witness colourful rituals and prayers. As a volunteer in the teaching English to monks program, a volunteer will work in the monastery where volunteers will teach English to the monks and during the teaching, you will be encouraged to converse with monks to improve their speech. You will also teach them about grammar rules and try to increase their vocabulary. you will work in the monastery where you will find accommodation for eating and studying. The monasteries are usually very spacious. A central building will house a prayer room. And volunteers should also be flexible practical self-motivated and open-minded to learning a new culture.

Nepal has many spectacular Buddhist monasteries. These monasteries house hundreds of monks enrolled in the life of Monk-hood from early in their lives. They study and live in the monastery. They mostly use the Tibetan language only during their study and their chances of learning English are very limited.

What does a teaching English to monks volunteer to do?

Volunteers can teach English and math, and engage Buddhist monks in creative and fun activities or sports for around 3 to 4 hours per day in Nepal. Even if you have less experience, we provide teaching materials to assist you. Moreover, the monks share their knowledge and culture with the volunteers. If you ask the monks, you can learn meditation techniques and gain a deep understanding of the Buddhist culture. This is one of our most popular volunteering positions, as it offers a unique opportunity to get fully involved in the daily life of a Buddhist monastery.

Do I need any qualifications or skills to do this work?

To work in this role, you do not need any specific qualifications, but it is important that you have a good command of the English language. Additionally, you should be culturally sensitive as you'll be working in a religious environment that may be quite different from what you're used to. As Buddhist monks participate in various religious activities throughout the year, the structure of your volunteering program may need to be adjusted at times. Therefore, we ask that you remain flexible to accommodate any such changes.

Volunteering opportunities are available at Buddhist monasteries in Kathmandu Valley, Pokhara and Salleri (Solukhumbhu, Himalayan region). Welcome to Volunteer in Nepal, a non-governmental, non-profit, non-religious, and non-political organization registered with the Nepal Government, Kathmandu District Administration office, and affiliated with the Social Welfare Council of Nepal. Volunteer in Nepal is a small Nepali-conceived and run organization that uses local and international resources to improve the health and well-being of underprivileged Nepali children and women. We offer them education, shelter, food, and vocational training to enable them to fully and equally contribute to Nepali society and compete in the global arena.
