Adoption Counselor

Adoption Counselor volunteers play a crucial role in solidifying the human/animal bond, while also helping us give animals another chance at finding their people. This volunteer will assist the Adoption Coordination staff with vetting applicants; speaking with applicants about their lifestyle, time allocation, and members of their family who will also care for the animal; answering general and specific pet-related questions; scheduling in-person "meet-and-greets"; Conducting Zoom/phone interviews with applicants and adopters; other duties as assigned. This person should be extremely knowledgeable about domestic animals; has experience via their own pets (preferably shelter pets); comfortable with engaging with the public; ability to provide excellent customer service; firmly believes in equity, diversity, and inclusion; and ready to help shelter pets find their forever families!

Remote work available after training period

Qualifications and Requirements:

    • Available to Volunteers at Level III or above*
    • Attended our New Volunteer Orientation
    • Attended Event Orientation
    • Must have exceptional knowledge of cats and dogs
    • Knowledge of rabbits and other small mammals is a plus
    • Excellent organizational skills
    • Possess the ability to follow written and verbal direction
    • Must be a self-starter
    • Must be respectful toward animals and people
    • Possess the ability to remain objective while speaking with potential adopters
    • Must commit to a regular schedule of at least 8 hours/month

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Actively listen to adopters and determine their experience level and needs
  • Self-educating on our available animals to provide a solid matchmaking experience
  • Provide appropriate level of care information based on the experience level of the adopter
  • Monitor the appointment spreadsheet and prepare for upcoming appointments assigned to them
  • Monitor the new application spreadsheets and contact adopters in a timely manner

In addition to possessing the required skills and education requirements, candidates with English-Spanish bilingual linguistic capabilities would be preferred.

The Animal Care League is a limited admission shelter located in Oak Park. We help homeless cats, dogs and other small animals by providing them food, shelter, medical attention and love until we can find them a loving home. As a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, we depend on the generosity of our communities to help us meet our goals of finding new homes for as many animals as possible each year.
