Fencing Rooftops to Protect State Threatened Birds

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Audubon Florida

Audubon Florida is in need for volunteers to assist in installing temporary chick protective fencing on three rooftops in Miramar Beach.

Audubon Florida works to protect native birds and their habitats. Many coastal birds that nest on the beach have been found to nest on flat-gravel rooftops due to habitat loss and disturbances. The most commonly found bird to nest at these roofs is the state-threatened Least Tern. To minimize risks and promote nesting success, Audubon helps protect nesting seabirds by installing temporary chick protective fencing to help keep the chicks from running off the roof or into exposed gutters, keeping them safe within their colony where their parents can tend to them.

Tasks/Expectations:
Volunteers will need to climb a ladder to access the roof and be ok working with heights. Due to Covid-19, volunteers must be willing to bring their own work gloves and abide to social distancing practices and the use of facial coverings. CLOSED TOED SHOES ARE A MUST. Please bring water, sunscreen, a lunch, and anything else you need to work in the elements.
