Thank you for your interest in this volunteer opportunity!

The Educational Alliance Center for Recovery and Wellness (CRW) has remained open, providing support for members and the surrounding community during this time. As social distancing restrictions lessen, CRW has reopened its twice weekly Free Brown Bag program. Through this program, we distribute over 300 bags of food to the community each week. We are looking for volunteers to help!

The Free Brown Bag operates twice a week, with slightly different timing and activities on the two days:

  • Mondays 10:00AM - 1:00PM - Food Distribution
    • Volunteers will help unload prepacked food packages - "free brown bags" - from storage containers so that they are available for distribution.
    • Volunteers will assist in distributing these free brown bags to community members - this will involve interacting with community members and tracking bag distribution.
    • Volunteers will help with clean up.
  • Wednesday 2:00pm - 5:30PM - Food Packing and Distribution
    • Volunteers will help unload donated boxes of food from trucks and organize.
    • Volunteers will repack food items from boxes into "free brown bags."
    • Volunteers will assist in distributing these free brown bags to community members - this will involve interacting with community members and tracking bag distribution.
    • Volunteers will help with clean up.

This is an in-person volunteering opportunity, and we want you to know that many precautions are in place. The facility is sanitized daily, masks are required, gloves are available, and contact tracing / temperature checks are required for everyone entering the facility. If you are well and able, you will be providing valuable support to CRW during this challenging time.

Sign up is quick and easy - please go to the Educational Alliance volunteer portal at: https://cerv.is/m?0038x750

About Educational Alliance/Manny Cantor Center

Mission Statement

Educational Alliance brings together and partners with diverse communities in Lower Manhattan, offering individuals and families high-quality, multi-generational programs and services that enhance their well-being and socioeconomic opportunities..

Our commitment to the diversity of the Lower East Side is reflected in our programming: Head Start classrooms sit alongside our private preschool; the Weinberg Center for Balanced Living creates community for older adults of all backgrounds and abilities; our fitness center is utilized by neighborhood residents of all ethnicities, income levels, and ages through an innovative tiered membership model. The Educational Alliance Art School uses the study and mastery of fine arts to forge connections between students and master teachers. Afterschool programs serve community needs for recreation, fitness, education, and college preparation. Community and cultural programming invites deep conversation and calls to action.

The Manny Cantor Center is the flagship building of Educational Alliance, a community-based organization offering a wide range of programs that integrate education, social services, arts and recreation throughout the Lower East Side and East Village. Created to assist Eastern European Jews immigrating to NYC, it has been serving the area since 1889. Educational Alliance has grown and changed as the Lower East Side has; now serving the diverse population that currently resides here.
