VISION
The people of Songea, Tanzania, will meet basic, health, and educational needs of their children.
MISSION
Songea’s Kids collaborates with Tanzanian partners to support orphans and other vulnerable children, and build self-sustaining infrastructure in Hope Village.
Songea's Kids focuses on orphans, education and entrepreneurship. Songea is in the poor, rural south of Tanzania. We partner with Tanzania NGO Jirani Mwema to care for up to 65 orphans and vulnerable children in Mshangano Ward. We fund basic needs, health care and education for the orphans through a child sponsorship program. In 2010 we provided well funds so the children and villagers have clean water. Our seed funds for a now self-sustaining chicken-raising project resulted in improved child nutrition and income to support orphan needs. TZ NGO partner Hope Village Organization, in collaboration with USA partners Sundberg Architectural Initiatives and Engineers Without Borders--Puget Sound Professional Chapter, is designing and constructing Kijiji cha Matumaini (Hope Village), in greatly under-served Lutukira Village. This residential facility will serve 160 most vulnerable children, including babies and street children in desperate need of safe, nurturing care. Hope Village (HV) will include a dispensary, nursery/pre-primary school, agricultural vocational school. HV will be sustainable, durable, fit the needs of the community, use local materials, be built by local labor, not require excessive inputs or produce excessive waste, be maintainable with local skills. Earthquake-resistant buildings, solar power, rocket stoves are included. Buildings are designed with the dignity of the children in mind, so they are raised in a respectful way, surrounded by architecture that respects them as human beings. A deep solar well will be drilled in the fall of 2015, and the first orphan housing is planned for May 2016. Business leaders in Dar es Salaam, USA donors, Ruvuma and Songea government officials, and local Songea residents are moving these projects forward. See videos/details at www.songeaskids.org.
