Home Start is a non-profit social services agency located in San Diego, California. We are committed to a community-based collaborative effort to reach children and families at risk in order to prevent child abuse and neglect. Our dedicated staff work on the front lines each day in the battle to keep children safe and help them thrive.

Home Start is seeking an organized, dependable volunteer to provide administrative support to the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. This volunteer will work directly with Home Start VITA staff and will be supervised by the VITA Site Coordinators and Earned Income Tax Credit Coordinator. VITA is a federal program that provides free tax filing for communities and families in need. This position is a great opportunity to grow experience in administration and client services, while supporting Home Start’s mission to prevent child abuse and neglect.


Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Client Scheduler is responsible for answering phone, screening tax clients for eligibility, scheduling appointments, and returning phone calls.
  • Willing to complete basic training and learn provided scheduling software.
  • Training will be provided to ensure that only clients whose taxes are within the scope of the VITA program requirements are scheduled- ex: low-income, at-risk, etc.
  • The VITA Client Scheduler must enjoy working with people from all backgrounds, serve them with the utmost respect, and provide clients with an overall pleasant experience.
  • This person will assist as needed with intake, and assure that client documentation is in order.
  • Client Scheduler will maintain client/taxpayer confidentiality and keep all information private.
    • NOTE- This position will assist with VITA Scheduling through May 2021.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations with tact, professionalism, and diplomacy.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Regular phone calls and communications with clients, Tax Preparers, and Staff.
  • Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds at times.
