Do you want to take action to save wildlife and wild places but don't know where to start? Join the Volunteer team for our 2024 season. We have a wide range of opportunities with a variety of needs and all have an impact on our mission!

  • Individuals or groups
  • Adults 18+, Teens 14-17, and our NEW category Family! (ages 11+ with an adult)
  • Morning, daytime or evening hours
  • Set schedules or choose your own adventure and pick up shifts when it works for you
  • Onsite and offsite tasks
Areas that have volunteer roles include Admissions, Food Service, Gift Shop, Zoo Events, Animal Care, Animal Nutrition, Guest Programs Education, Horticulture, Administration, and Conservation. Opportunities are filled on a rolling basis and are dependent on the operating calendar for the area, so not all are available at all times of the year.

Description

John Ball Zoo has been accredited by Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) since 1983. Our accreditation is your assurance that you are supporting a facility dedicated to providing excellent care for animals, a great experience for you, and a better future for all living things. Through AZA we participate in 49 Species Survival Plans & 39 taxon advisory groups. We currently have over 220 species and 2,400 individual animals we care for daily.

John Ball Zoo is the 4th most attended cultural facility in Michigan, with a economic impact in our communities of $40 million. Annually the Zoo has over 600,000 visitors, and reaches over 800,000 individuals with wildlife and conservation messages. We are part of the nationally recognized program "Museums For All" to provide reduced price admission for qualified families across the state of Michigan.

  • Orientation or Training
  • Time commitment varies depending on the assignment. There is a range from weekly commitment to a pickup shifts as you would like.
  • Must be able to navigate the zoo to your volunteer location. Ability to interact positively and appropriately with guests and other team members.
