Volunteer Bookkeeper / Accountant

Job Description

About the Friends of Detroit Animal Care and Control

Friends of Detroit Animal Care and Control exists to support Detroit Animal Care and Control in the areas of volunteer management, donation solicitation and acceptance, and live release, which includes shelter intervention.

The Bookkeeper is responsible for all Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, General Ledger, and Accounting office duties. This is a part time volunteer position.

Skills / Qualifications

  • Proven bookkeeping experience
  • Solid understanding of basic bookkeeping and accounting payable/receivable principles
  • Proven ability to calculate, post and manage accounting figures and financial records
  • Hands-on experience with QuickBooks, Microsoft Excel
  • Proficiency in English and in MS Office
  • Knowledge of budgeting process
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Associate degree in Finance, Accounting or Business Administration, preferred

Responsibilities

  • Maintains vendor accounts
  • Maintains Chart of Accounts
  • Communicates with vendors with the assistance of the Executive Director on invoices in question, and provision of tax-exempt status
  • Processes payables (while verifying proper procedures used and necessary approvals received) from receipt, coding, entry, approval, check writing, online payment, mailing, and hard-copy storage
  • Processes receivables from receipt to deposit
  • Prepares and files all applicable taxes on a monthly/quarterly basis and in accordance with the applicable tax filing deadlines
  • Prepares monthly bank reconciliations.
  • Generates adjusting journal entries and financial statements monthly
  • Maintains depreciation
  • Prepares functional expenses
  • Interfaces with auditors and assists in the preparation of the audit and tax return
  • Prepares and files payroll taxes quarterly and yearly
  • Oversees collection of past due accounts
  • Maintains the Petty Cash
  • Prepares Profit & Loss statements for all special events, fundraisers, etc.
  • Attends Finance Committee meetings
  • Attends other meetings when requested

Additional Details

Once a financial assessment is complete, there is a possibility this can become a part-time paid position.
