Job purpose

The Community Literature Initiative (CLI) is seeking a Book Publishing Assistant to join the World Stage Press team. In this role, you will be responsible for the administrative and operational duties that are required to run an independent publishing press based in South Los Angeles. Not only will you see firsthand how a manuscript is transformed into a published book, but you will be a part of the process!

Under the guidance of the World Stage Press Manager, you will play a vital role in overseeing book production and distribution. By publishing and sharing these important narratives and works, you will be directly impacting the community by creating an inclusive and encouraging space for writers, poets, and artists alike.


Duties and responsibilities
  • Assist in book production, book release, and distribution, which may include but is not limited to:
    • Support and coordinate meetings between author and editors on script editing, cover design, layout, and proof printing
    • Ensure author has access to the Author’s Guest List, Book Production Schedule, Author’s Deadline, Event Planning Worksheet
    • Coordinate the book release schedule and take notes during events
    • Fill and prepare book release orders
    • Calculate royalties and payments
  • Check and respond to all customer inquiries and departmental emails on a daily basis
  • Maintain accurate financial records and receipt history for bank account
  • Assist the upload of new releases to Kindle Direct Publishing
  • Communicate with internal departments for proper accounting and event coordination
  • Support and ensure design team is well-equipped with all materials, files, and language required
  • Update the website with new books for catalog and upcoming events

Preferred qualifications

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Suite, G Suite, Adobe Suite, Asana, and ability to learn additional software programs
  • Highly organized, strong time management, and resounding work ethic
  • Excellent communication skills, as well as an eye for design
  • Interest in any of the following: design, publishing, poetry, creative writing, nonprofit organizations

Working conditions

Virtual opportunity, minimum of three days a week, from 9am to 1pm PST. A commitment of four months is required.


Direct reports

Reports to World Stage Press Manager who oversees Book Production and Administrative tasks through the management of Authors, Graphic Designers, Editors, Volunteers, etc.

Description

The Community Literature Initiative is a Los Angeles based nonprofit organization focused on teaching writers in the city how to create poetry and fiction of a publishable quality. The CLI course is a 10-month (September to June) training program to refine works-in-progress into finalized manuscripts ready for publication. At the conclusion of the 10-month program, all participants are guaranteed a first-book publishing contract with one of our partnering Los Angeles Small Presses. At the conclusion of our program, all students emerge knowledgeable published authors! In addition to offering these courses, CLI staff & students teach free creative writing courses in local high schools.
