ORGANIZATION: SOUTH END NEIGHBORHOOD TUTORS

Our after-school one-on-one tutoring program offers monthly STEM challenges for our students to complete. They can have the entire month to accomplish whatever the challenge is. There may be "research reading" involved to give them the background to come up with a solution to the challenge. We encourage a writing activity at the end to summarize their various attempts and final solution.

We are looking for a person who will be in charge of coming up with the monthly challenges for students in the first through fifth grades and gathering the materials needed in order to complete it. This year, due to COVID-19, we will need this person to package up the materials for distribution to our students so they can complete these challenges at home with help from the tutor via Zoom.

Our coordinator may need to work with our tutors virtually to give them ideas on how to direct the students.

About SOUTH END NEIGHBORHOOD TUTORS

Location:

PO BOX 61, ALBANY, NY 12201, US

Mission Statement

Connecting elementary school children with caring and dedicated tutors, our one-on-one tutoring program enhances literacy, fosters creativity, and supplements classroom learning in the South End of Albany. Reading is essential *** One-on-one tutoring works *** Every child has worth

Description

After tutoring within a nearby elementary school for several years, a number of us decided to do more and started an after-school tutoring program located about a block east of the elementary school 3 1/2 years ago. The school is located in a low-income neighborhood and the only 13% of the children in the 3rd - 6th grade read on grade level.

Starting our program with 1st and 2nd graders, and remaining with them through their elementary years, it is the hope to have all our students reading on grade level by the end of third grade. This gives them a chance to be successful students when they reach middle school.

We work with the students to improve reading, writing and problem solving skills. The five components of reading are stressed - phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. We publish an anthology of the students' writing at the end of each year. And there is a STEM problem with no "right" answer to challenge their creativity each month.

We have had a two of our students moved into the elementary school's Young Scholars Program.

We are looking for tutors who will be committed to working with the same student for at least one school year. We also need board members and a webmaster.
