The Victim Advocate Volunteer will assist the victim advocate unit with office duties such as: filing, faxing, creating notes, emailing information, mailing informational material, etc. Additionally, the volunteer will build communication skills by contacting victims of crime to inform them of their rights, the criminal justice process and resources available. The volunteer will gain experience on the criminal justice process, victim rights, crisis intervention skills, community resources available to crime victims, safety planning and the victim compensation program. This opportunity best suits students studying criminal justice, social work, psychology and other related fields. Spanish speaking volunteer is preferred.

Mission Statement

The Victim Advocate Unit at the City of Hialeah Police Department assist those who have been a victim or witness to a crime. Being a victim of a crime can cause stress in many areas of one's life. The purpose of the unit is to provide support to victims of crime by helping them navigate throughout the criminal justice process, educate victims on their rights, provide safety resources, referrals and other guidance that may help one regain control of their life after experiencing a crime.

Description

Our Victim Advocates assist victims with services such as filing for the victim compensation program, information regarding the criminal justice process and victim rights, information regarding the restraining order/ injunction for protection process, crisis intervention, safety planning, address confidentiality program, safety planning, information on domestic violence shelters, referrals to counseling, accompaniment, etc. The Victim Advocates follow-up with victims to assist with unmet needs. They maintain contact with mental health providers, hospitals, The Office of Attorney General, Rape Treatment Center, and other community providers to assist with delivery of quality services.

  • Orientation or Training
  • Volunteer will be needed at least 4 hours a week within the hours of 9AM to 4PM, Monday-Friday. We will work with your schedule within this timeframe.
  • Criminal background check and fingerprinting must be completed prior to beginning volunteer position. Spanish speaker preferred.
