Audubon Florida is searching for volunteers to monitor rooftop nesting locations in the Panhandle of Florida for state-threatened seabirds. We currently have 14 sites within the Fort Walton Beach/Destin/Sandestin area that need a monitor for the 2021 nesting season.
Audubon Florida works to protect native birds and their habitats. Many coastal birds that nest on the beach have been found to nest on flat-gravel rooftops due to habitat loss and disturbances. The most commonly found bird to nest at these roofs is the state-threatened the Least Tern. Audubon monitors Least Tern colonies throughout the panhandle from March - August.
Tasks/Expectations:
Volunteers are required to monitor each site for a minimum of 15 minutes per week
Create your own schedule... go as little or as frequent as you would like, whichever day works best for you
No experience or knowledge of birds is required - we will train you!
Afraid of heights? Not a problem. All surveys are done from the ground
Must be willing to learn
