DemocracyLab connects skilled volunteers with technology-for-good projects, resulting in better civic technologies, more active citizens, and more efficient institutions. At the same time, we are also looking to optimizing the connection between tech-centric volunteers and tech-for-good project, while leading the technical effort to expand on the functionality of our web app (visit www.democracylab.org). The Lead Designer will lead DemocracyLab’s Design team to research and design experiences to help users meet their goals.
If you’re interested in leading our team of designers and moving forward in your career, then this is for you. We expect you to be a tech-savvy professional, curious about new digital technologies and aspires to combine usability with visual design. Much like an early-stage startup, there is an emphasis on building process infrastructure for the organization's long-term growth plans. We are a group of volunteer self-starters working autonomously at our own time, our own pace and are looking for similar candidates that share our passion for DemocracyLab's vision and mission.
Key Responsibilities :
- Manage Design team members and help them achieve their volunteer and professional goals
- Have demonstrated experience in UX/UI, user experience, and user interface
- Review relevant research performed by DemocracyLab related to design tasks
- Conduct research interviews and exercise with potential users
- Create designs using Figma or other design programs
- Conduct usability tests
Minimum Requirements :
- Strong visual design skills- the ability to craft compelling UI elements
- Experience with, and an advocate for, the user experience design process
- Ability to identify usability best practices during design reviews and in your own work
- Ability to clearly articulate the reasoning behind your design recommendations
- Self-driven, ownership, and follow-through- be able to drive your work forward independently
Education or Experience Preferred : Relevant training and/or experience in User Interface design. We will request to review the applicant’s design portfolio.
Knowledge or Skills Preferred : Working knowledge of Figma for design, prototyping, and developer handoff. Familiarity with similar tools is acceptable.
Length of Appointment : We request that a volunteer be able to commit a minimum of 3 months to this position.
Time Commitment : We request that a volunteer be willing to commit a minimum of 5 hours per week to this position.
Communication: DemocracyLab uses Slack as its primary form of communication. Files will be shared using Google Drive.
Support Provided : Volunteer orientation, coaching, and feedback as needed.
