Girls First is currently seeking volunteers to help for its current 2021 Winter/Spring session. The mission of Girls First is to build character, instill a positive sense of self, and provide tangible life skills through a creative curriculum of arts exploration, academic reinforcement, and emotional learning. Girls First provides a safe, stable environment where students practice respect for self and others, exercise appropriate interactions with peers and adults, discover new skills and talents, and develop tools that will allow them to achieve greater success in school and beyond. We serve up to 31 girls in grades 1 through 4.
Girls First meets virtually Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00pm until 5:30pm. Each programming day consists of snack and conversation time (Chew and Chat), gentle stretching and breathing exercises, and 45 minute small group arts-based activities.
Volunteer responsibilities include joining a breakout room with a group during snack time and facilitating conversations, encouraging engagement during stretching, providing support to teaching artists during activities, or leading learning games, and above all, providing positive mentorship and building nurturing relationships with students.
Volunteers may choose one or two days of the week to volunteer, but we ask that all volunteers commit to that day on a weekly basis and do their best to miss no more than 3 out of the 18 weeks left of programming.
Our 2020-2021 Winter Session kicked off on Tuesday, January 12th and will conclude on Thursday, May 27th. No programming is held when school is out of session for professional development or holidays.
Mandatory volunteer training will be held towards the end of January. Volunteers must provide recent background clearances.
If you are interested in volunteering, please fill out this Volunteer Interview Form: https://forms.gle/ryu3tJTv47KcaY7L6 . You may also contact the Program Coordinator, Raeanna Ellis ( raeanna@girlsfirst.org ) with your name, contact information, and a bit of background information about yourself.
All volunteers must provide recent PA Background Check, Child Abuse Clearance, and FBI Fingerprinting (only those who have not lived in PA for 10 years or longer)

Historically, enrollment comprised girls mainly from Gotwals Elementary, Hancock Elementary, and various other Norristown Area School District schools. This year, we have returned to four-day In-person programming on-site and opened up the roster to any student with reliable transportation to our program site located at 1208 Green Street. We serve a diverse population of African-American, Hispanic, and Caucasian families. A significant number of the girls reside in the local Norristown community.
