Girls First is currently seeking volunteers to help for its current 2021 Winter/Spring session. The mission of Girls First is to build character, instill a positive sense of self, and provide tangible life skills through a creative curriculum of arts exploration, academic reinforcement, and emotional learning. Girls First provides a safe, stable environment where students practice respect for self and others, exercise appropriate interactions with peers and adults, discover new skills and talents, and develop tools that will allow them to achieve greater success in school and beyond. We serve up to 31 girls in grades 1 through 4.
Girls First meets virtually Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00pm until 5:30pm. Each programming day consists of snack and conversation time (Chew and Chat), gentle stretching and breathing exercises, and 45 minute small group arts-based activities.
Volunteer responsibilities include joining a breakout room with a group during snack time and facilitating conversations, encouraging engagement during stretching, providing support to teaching artists during activities, or leading learning games, and above all, providing positive mentorship and building nurturing relationships with students.
Volunteers may choose one or two days of the week to volunteer, but we ask that all volunteers commit to that day on a weekly basis and do their best to miss no more than 3 out of the 18 weeks left of programming.
Our 2020-2021 Winter Session kicked off on Tuesday, January 12th and will conclude on Thursday, May 27th. No programming is held when school is out of session for professional development or holidays.
Mandatory volunteer training will be held towards the end of January. Volunteers must provide recent background clearances.

About Girls First
1208 Green St, Norristown, PA 19401, US
The mission of Girls First is to build character, instill a positive sense of self, and provide tangible life skills through a creative curriculum of arts exploration, academic reinforcement, and emotional learning.
Girls First provides a safe, stable environment where students practice respect for self and others, exercise appropriate interactions with peers and adults, discover new skills and talents, and develop tools that will allow them to achieve greater success in school and beyond.
The current enrollment of 31 girls comes mainly from Gotwals Elementary, Marshall Street Elementary, and Hancock Elementary schools of the Norristown Area School District. We serve a diverse population of African-American, Hispanic, and Caucasian families. A significant number of the girls come from low-income and/or single parent households.
The following describes the Pre-COVID "In person programming experience,"
Our program typically operates from 3 to 6 PM every Monday through Thursday, concurrent with the Norristown Area School District’s schedule. After arriving via the free bus, which Girls First provides, the children begin their homework, working individually or in small groups with volunteer assistance. This is followed by a nutritious meal, conversation and socializing. The meal is prepared by volunteers and occasionally by the girls themselves or their parents. Next, the girls do a creative activity such as writing, painting, cooking, music or drama.
