Basic Needs Mission Statement: To engage the community in supporting families and individuals by providing access to quality used clothing, household items and furniture in a convenient and dignified manner.

Position Title: Food Donation Assistant

Position Overview: Food Donation Assistant is a volunteer position that aids in the procurement and delivery of food donations from local businesses.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Be an excellent ambassador for Basic Needs Thrift Shop when receiving donations
  • Assist with receiving, transporting, delivering, and sorting food donations
  • Prepare merchandise for placement on the sales floor
  • Maintain proper temperature and health standards when transporting food donations
  • Assist with carrying in donations both from the businesses and into stone soup
  • Work as part of a team to efficiently deliver food
  • Record volunteer hours

Impact of Role: Managing the logistics of food donations effectively ensures that community members can rely on receiving donations at Basic Needs Thrift Shop. Nearly 100% of the food we receive from businesses get redistributed to the community, thus preventing food waste and feeding hungry families.

Support: The Food Donation Assistant will report to and be supported by the Volunteer Coordinator.

Schedule and Commitment: Food Donation Assistants are asked to commit to a regular schedule of at least two volunteer shifts per month. Shifts can vary in length depending on the amount of donations and depending on the volunteer's availability. All shifts require transporting food from local businesses to our store: 950 3 rd Street, Suite 101, St. Paul Park, MN.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Ability to work with people from a wide variety of backgrounds and life experiences
  • Must be able to stand, bend, lift and reach for two hours at a time and able to lift 35 pounds
  • Must pass a background check, have a valid driver’s license, insurance, and a clean driving record
  • An orientation and all job-specific training will be provided!

Basic Needs is a Thrift Store that accepts donated goods (toys, clothing, furniture, household goods, etc...) to be purchased by customers or donated to individuals with vouchers from local area agencies. It is run with only a few paid employees and the rest volunteer.
