Diablo Valley Literacy Council

Our all-volunteer organization for teaching English to non-English speaking adults is seeking somebody to lead and assume the position of Board President within the next two years. Our board meets once a month, currently using Zoom. When we are able to meet in person we meet at a church in Concord.

The duties in a nutshell are:

Supervise and control the affairs of the organization
Preside at meetings of the Board of Directors
Preside at meetings of the members (usually 2-3 a year)
Write agenda for Board meetings and Annual meetings
Annual Report due end of August to send to ProLiteracy

We would be able to train the candidate for up to two years or whenever that person felt ready to take the helm. We currently have 9 board members and about 50 volunteer tutors.

Mission Statement

"to teach English to non-English speaking adults"

BECOME a TUTOR - No teaching experience is necessary and English need not be your first language. You will help non-English speaking adults to learn the English language. Our organization will teach you how to be a tutor! We will train you, match you to a student and help you get started with your one-on-one tutoring. We ask that you commit one or two hours per week -- all meetings are arranged by you and your student at a time most convenient for both of you. Through your tutoring you may help an adult student to get a better job, apply for citizenship, read to their children....there are so many possibilities!

Diablo Valley Literacy Council holds two workshops per year at the Good Lutheran Shepherd Church on Clayton Road. The workshops are held the spring and fall and open enrollment year around.

A small registration fee will help cover the cost of the workshop and training materials.

Please come join us. You can change a life!
