YOU CAN HELP TO ENSURE MCSHAN READING HOMEROOM IS A QUALITY PROGRAM WITH HAPPY PARTICIPANTS BY SERVING AS AN OFFICIAL OBSERVER. Once you get the hang of our program through OBSERVATION, you may also want to tutor a student!
Focusing on basic phonics, reading, writing and reading comprehension, we currently serve 105 immigrant/refugee students who come to the United States knowing ittle to no English. Their parents rarely speak English, and many parents and children have never attended formal schooling.
McShan Reading Homeroom heralds over 150 virtual tutors ranging in age and experience from 15 through 80+. Virtual tutors select times Monday through Sunday 8am to 8pm to deliver 45 minute sessions following specified curriculum.
GUIDELINES FOR YOUR ROLE AS AN OFFICIAL OBSERVER ARE AVAILABLE HERE:
The mission of the Vickery Meadow Summer Reading Academy (VMSRA) is to include the students of Vickery Meadow who would not read/write or hear/speak English all summer; provide food, socialization and exercise for those who would not eat well, or even leave the apartment because parents work and are afraid to let them play outside; tutor students so that they are better prepared and inspired to enter school in the Fall after four weeks of the Academy. McShan Reading Homeroom began as an off-shoot of VMSRA in 2015, and is now in full operation throughout the school year, focusing on basic English, reading, writing, and reading comprehension. Since March 2020, MRH and VMSRA have been fuly virtual, and will continue to be until the pandemic subsides and volunteers are once again permitted to volunteer in person.
We are a volunteer staff of youth and adults
who care about the English education of the
children of Vickery Meadow,Dallas,TX.
