Purpose: To come alongside older adults who live alone and build a community where they feel cared for & valued by assisting them in resolving light home repair and home maintenance issues.
Location: Hamilton County
Responsibilities & Expectations: Home maintenance volunteers will need to be available on average 1-2x per month to assist elders in the Hamilton County, TN area with home repairs and/or maintenance, such as assisting with yard work, assisting in and/or referring to someone who repairs household items (sinks, windows, stoves, washer/dryers, door locks, etc). It will be at your discretion, based on the Program Directors supervision to choose to go to the individual's home and resolve the submitted home maintenance issue. If the issue is something you are uncomfortable doing, we understand & want you to express that so we may call on another individual with more experience in that area!
Qualifications: Valid license and insurance required. Reliable transportation a must. Willing to meet different kinds of people and being open to new experiences strongly preferred. We are excited about encouraging inter-generational friendships, but you must have a parent or guardian accompany you if you are under 18. Must feel comfortable visiting homes of individuals. Must adhere to CDC recommendations/guidelines. Remain 6+ feet apart from others at all times, wear a mask unless you're outside of the home and away from others, and always respect the wishes of the individual we are serving. This opportunity is only for individuals in the greater Chattanooga area or willing to travel to Hamilton County & some surrounding areas. Must be available to be "on-call" and able to visit the home and assess any issues within a week of notification of need.

Hospitality at Home is the flagship program of St. Alexius Outreach Ministries, Inc., the newest ministry of the Alexian Brothers. Creating connection for lonely, isolated older adults is at the heart of what we do. We are sustained by our dedicated volunteers, committed support staff, and the presence and service of the Alexian Brothers. Our mission is to alleviate isolation and loneliness through friendship and supportive services.
Description
Isolation and loneliness are growing crises within the ever-increasing older adult population. These factors impact seniors' overall well-being by affecting physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health while also increasing susceptibility to abuse. We serve older adults (70+) living alone by offering ongoing friendship and supportive services to alleviate these risk factors while bringing hope and reassurance. While our focus is on serving older adults, as many as 1 in 5 Americans experience loneliness and we believe that this ministry can address loneliness for people of all ages through volunteerism and friendship.
