Reading Buddies in all elementary schools in county
Want to make a difference in the life of a child? Want to instill the love of reading? Choose an elementary school near your home or work and volunteer 30 minutes to an hour once a week for a semester or a year listening to a 1st, 2nd or 3rd grade child read. A lot of these children have no one at home with time to listen to them practice reading or to share stories of their week. Teachers say that Reading Buddies make a tremendous difference in a child's reading ability, but the greatest improvement they see is in socialization skills and desire to learn. Reading Buddies always get more than they give.
Volunteers tell the Reading Buddy coordinator which school, which time of day and day they prefer. She matches you with a teacher and student. If you can stay an hour, you probably will work with three different children for 20 minutes each. Children bring something with them to read or you can bring one of your favorite books to read to the child. No phonetics or teaching skills necessary. Just help the children when they need help with a word and discuss the story with them for comprehension. Reading Buddies have an appreciation lunch or tea at the end of the school year.
